Youngsters Bowl C Team to Victory

Great Melton C (25 points) beat Horsford C (2 points) by 7 wickets at Manor Park in the Lucas & Fettes Norfolk League Division 6

Melton C continued their good start to their first season in Division 6 with a resounding victory at Horford.  Melton skipper Mally Howard won the toss and invited Horsford to bat but Melton's five U16 players in the side bowled with such discipline and consistency that they controlled the innings from start to finish. Some excellent fielding by Michael Farmer removed skipper Spenceley run out in the first over and Stuart Wilson (8.3-5-7-2) followed this with his first senior wicket to leave the hosts two down at the end of the first over. There was no complacency however in the visitors approach as Tom Smith (8-3-13-3), the pick of the Melton bowlers, applied a stranglehold on the match. Ably supported by the quick and lively Josh Mellor (5-2-3-1) and the consistent Farmer (5-3-6-2) Melton got to the drinks break with the score at 31 for 6. Joe Bickle (6-1-19-1) the last of the U16s to get his chance on the day got his reward with a smart stumping. Leo de Salis (6-4-5-0) contained the opponents during his spell but it was the return of Smith and Wilson that closed the innings on 61 all out, a score that could have been lower had skipper Mally Howard held on to two catchable chances.

Melton still had work to do and Horsford, fielding eight juniors them selves were always likely to put up a fight. Opening bowlers Collinson (7-3-12-2) and Barbar (7-1-24-1) worked hard and removed 3 of the Melton top order. Only Steve Clarke (28 no) batted through and when he was joined by Mally Howard (15 no) at 25 for three, the veteran pair upped the tempo and closed the innings in the next five overs. This was an excellent win for Melton C against one of the biggest clubs in the county.
