Wood & Allum put Acle to the sword.

Richard Wood and Dave Allum both notched up centuries in a 222 run stand for the 2nd wicket, as GreatMelton racked up an imposing 274 for 1 against Acle ‘A' in division 3.

The visitors won the toss and elected to field but some wayward bowling got Melton off to a flyer as Cooper (23) struck 3 handsome boundaries before a loose drive was caught at deep cover to give Acle their first and only success.  Allum looked indecisive at the start of his innings but he and Wood are probably Melton's most determined batsman and together they forged a partnership that took the game right away from Acle.  Wood hit 16 boundaires and Allum 15 as the Acle bowlers toiled in the face of some fine batting – in the final over Wood received a painful blow when he top edged a ball into his face resulting in nasty bruising & swelling to his right cheek bone, but he bravely carried on regardless to carry his bat and record his second league century of the summer.  Allum has also scored a century this summer but that was for Melton's “A” side  and since his inclusion, he has really taken his opportunity in the first X1.

In reply Acle's skipper, Tovell, played positively but when Mark Scott removed Clarke (10) and Newman (1) and Sibert accounted for Tovell (44), then at 67 for 3 after 18 overs Acle gave up the chase.  On a flat wicket making much impact into the batting line up proved difficult given the lack of attacking strokes played, although Siddell played very well for his 56 not out.  With men around the bat however Acle were “given” runs and although there was a wicket a piece for Harris and Rice, the visitors innings closed at 191 for 5, some 83 runs short of Melton's total.
