Under 9s Lose by 2 Runs at Topcroft

GREAT MELTON U9s lost to TOPCROFT U9s by 2 runs at Topcroft in the South Norfolk Community League

The result of the under 9s first match of the season, away to Topcroft, was decided on the very last ball of the game. Gt Melton needed a wicket to win, the home team just had to survive which they did, winning by 2 runs. Captain Blade Earley won the toss and decided to bat. Owen Ward and Jake Canning got the innings off to an energetic start, taking quick singles at every opportunity. They adopted a very positive approach but unfortunately were run out by some sharp fielding. Evan Mercer and Ansh Thakur were composed and batted well together. Freddie Pattison (6) and Blade (21) pushed the score along, with Blade finding the boundary with ease. Layla Ward and Nicholas Conway were the only pair not to lose a wicket. Nicholas hit a tremendous on drive for 4 which resulted in play being held up as the ball was lost in the ground’s perimeter hedge.  Gt Melton finished on 176-6 (146).

The Topcroft batters were soon under pressure with wickets taken by Freddie and Blade. Nicholas kept wicket and made some excellent stops and completed 2 run outs, in what was his first match behind the stumps. Jake, Owen, Evan and Layla all bowled well with Ansh showing great energy as he put Topcroft under pressure. Freddie made some important stops and on one occasion prevented a certain 4 with the ball crashing painfully into his chest. Topcroft scored 183-7 (148) winning by 2 runs. For most of the Gt Melton players this was their first competitive match with a hard ball. Despite the loss, there were many positives from the performance of the team.
