Having had their many-times-rearranged fixture with Garboldisham, scheduled for the previous evening, called off because Garboldisham could not raise a side, Great Melton U9s played their final match of the season, beating Hethersett and Tas Valley by 24 runs in a very entertaining game at Melton Park.
Having won the toss, Captain James Alcock elected to field. Despite some accurate bowling from openers George Alcock and James Canning, the visitors batted positively. Without losing any wickets, frequent quick singles were taken and Gt Melton were soon put under pressure. Jack Joice and Sanjit Alanoor, held their nerve and restricted the scoring. With the visitors seeming to take control of the match, the breakthrough came mid way through their innings, when Jake Tomkins and Charlie Hosmer both took two wickets. Yet another superb run out by James was followed up by him taking 3 wickets. Nicholas Conway had another good performance as wicket keeper. Hethersett and Tas Valley made 150 for 8, a net score of 110.
The Gt Melton batters, sporting the evidence of the refreshment break smeared across their faces, faced some accurate bowling from the visitors. After 8 overs, the match was again in the balance as Gt Melton lost 4 wickets and fell behind the required run rate. As has been a feature of the season, George then scored a rapid 13 with some powerful shots. The final pair of James (13) and Charlie (10) took the total to 164 for 6, a net score of 134. This was a sporting and well contested match, enjoyed by both sets of supporters in the early evening sunshine.
The team was: James Alcock (c), Nicholas Conway, George Alcock, Jake Tomkins, Jack Joice, Jake Canning, Charlie Hosmer, Sanjit Alanoor
