U11s Win a Thriller against Rocklands

Our U11 team ended victorious, winning by just 3 runs in a thrilling match against Rocklands that went down to the last ball. Captain Charlie Hosmer won the toss and elected to bat but the opening partnership of Charlie and Albert Cook was quickly broken when Albert was bowled for 0. Alice Brand came in to bat and the pair ran well between the wickets to take the score to 28 before Charlie (10) was caught at point. Soon after Alice retired after reaching a score of 31 – a great batting performance that included 6 boundaries. Niamh Rushton and Adit Raje carried on scoring well before Adit (3) was caught behind. Niamh and Ansh Thakur then took the score to 85 with several boundaries before Ansh was bowled for 7. Niamh (17*) and Sammy Belderson (1*) completed the innings and Melton finished on 90-4.

Rocklands showed their intentions to chase down the score when the first ball of their innings was hit for 4 runs. However, 3 quick wickets by Sammy, Danny and then Charlie left the score at 13-3 and the total looking more difficult. Rocklands number 4 and 5 batsmen, Harry Bridges and Bobby Campbell, had other ideas, though, and they quickly set about bringing down the required run rate to 10 an over from the final 3 overs. After Bobby retired on 30 and Harry was run out by Albert for 29, two new batters were at the crease with 9 required from the final over. Melton’s captain, Charlie, stepped up to bowl. The first 2 balls went for a leg bye and bye respectively and the third was a dot ball. With Rocklands running bravely between the wickets 3 runs were taken from the next 2 balls leaving the visitors needing 4 from the final ball. An excellent delivery from Charlie and a dot ball left everyone on the sidelines applauding a fantastic game of cricket and a win for Great Melton.

There was some excellent batting and bowling from both teams. The Melton team bowled just 1 wide and 1 no ball in their innings adding on only 4 bowling extras to the total – a fantastic achievement for a young cricketing side.
