U11s Unbeaten at Gresham’s but Cricket was the Winner
An outstanding day of Cricket was enjoyed by all at the Gresham's Festival in fine weather on Sunday. Meeting two teams from Gresham's as well as teams from Bradfield, Horsford and Langley Prep Melton u11s incredibly produced a 100% record throughout the day. After a fine 7 wicket win over Gresham's Prep in the first game and three further victories, the final game against the undefeated Langley would prove to be a decider.
Langley skipper Daniel Graves won the toss and elected to field, a fast start was needed and it was provided by Blade (23* retired) and Noah Moore (8) who raced to 42 off the first five overs. James Alcock (11*) and Charlie Hosmer (5*) closed the innings out with and additional 18 run partnership leaving Langley a competitive 60 runs to chase. What was remarkable was how well the team managed both the batting and fielding throughout the day but especially in this final game. Setting a good score is one thing but defending it is another. Captaining the final game Blade got his field placings and his bowling order perfect. Benedict Bailey and Dylan Crawley were very economical in the first overs and when James closed out the 6th over with 1 wicket for just 3 runs Langley were left too much to do and Melton took victory.
A team performance was produced in every game and contributions were made by each of the eight players. Blade led the way with the bat retiring twice, other retirees were George Alcock, Harry Cheal, Charlie and Noah. The chief wicket taker was James with figures of 5/18 which included a magnificent wicket in which a catch was taken by Blade at slip!!! Harry gained four wickets with contributions from all other players. Remarkably in such a short format of the game George and Blade both managed to achieve maiden overs helped primarily by Noah behind the stumps who also contributed to several run-outs. A fantastic day's cricket – well done all.
