Steve Clarke

Left-hand batsman; Wicketkeeper

‘Peg’ or Clarkey Senior first played for Melton on Sundays in 2001 but, having been a consistent opening batsman, originally for Loddon, then for Hingham, he finally decided to also play for Melton on Saturdays. Well known as a solid left-handed bat and regular A, B or C Team wicketkeeper, bizarrely two of his most memorable moments came as a bowler.  In his Melton career he’s taken just 7 wickets but 6 came in one match when he surprised his colleagues and bamboozled the opposition by taking 6-39 with his ‘dibbly-dobblers’ at Belton.  He also bowled one of the most memorable beamers in the history of the club at New Ifield on the 2002 tour. ‘Hit that f****r!’ has been a club catchphrase ever since. Over the years Steve has coached the juniors, been Membership Secretary, served on the Finance Committee and has done a considerable amount behind the scenes on the ground and in the pavilion.  For the past few seasons, though, he has taken more of a back seat and has made only occasional appearances but still goes on club tours where he is always good value.
