Skipper Hales Leads B Team to Victory

GREAT MELTON B (24 points) beat ST ANDREWS HOSPITAL (5 points) by 6 wickets at Town Close in the Norfolk League Division 2

A majestic unbeaten 75 from in-form B Team skipper Tim Hales following a good all-round performance from the bowlers enabled Melton to record their 3rd Division 2 victory of the season.  Hales more than made up for an uncharacteristically untidy display with the gloves by recording his third ‘not out' in succession as Melton chased down St Andrew's 143 all out.

Things looked ominous for the visitors when opener G.Wright chased a very wide delivery in Gary Coulson's first over and spooned a catch to Alex Tonnison in the covers.  Coulson, after conceding 3 boundaries in his first 2 overs, then settled into his customary rhythm recording figures of 12-1-32-2.  He found solid support in Duncan Greenslade (9-0-32-1) as the visitors reached 76-3 at drinks. Daryl Godbold (6-1-19-2) and Neal Clarke (9.5-4-14-4) then got among the wickets with Clarke, bowling with good control for the second successive week, trapping the visitors' top scorer T.Quinton lbw.  Matt Rennie then claimed 1-36 and held a good catch – much to his surprise – as St Andrews were bowled out for 143 in the 43rd over.

Melton suffered an early blow when Alex Pattison (6), who earlier had held a good running catch, saw a ball from Stuart Warmonger rise sharply off a length to catch his glove.  Godbold (12) supported Hales for a while as the skipper unleashed some stylish drives and cuts to reach his fifty in the 20th over.  Tim Goff (11) struck two sumptious cover drives before he and then Clarke (4) both engaged in some indecisive calling and were run out with Melton still 40 runs short of their target.  Steve Phoenix then joined Hales and the Chairman's quick 22 including 5 boundaries saw Melton home with Hales carrying his bat for an impressive 75.
