Six Wins Out of Six as U13s Stay Top of the League

GREAT MELTON U13s beat GREAT ELLINGHAM U13s by 18 runs at Ellingham in the South Norfolk Community League

League leaders Great Melton Under 13s made it six victories out of six at Great Ellingham but the game was much closer than the eventual margin of victory suggested.  Although the home side are struggling near the bottom of the table a combination of the heat, a lethargic Melton performance and some effective batting from Ellingham openers Harvey Lake and Harry Spelman meant that, Melton were never really in control until the final few overs.

Batting first after winning the toss, Melton scored 104-3 with Ryan Howard (23), James Ingham (10) and Matt Ling (14 not out) the main contributors.  After Howard was out, Melton’s batsmen were strangely subdued and the visitors were thankful for an ‘extras’ column that included 32 wides and 4 no balls in order to make three figures.  Spellman with 3 overs for just 5 runs was the pick of the Ellingham bowlers but Oliver Marlow (2-22) was the main wicket-taker.

Spelman and Lake then batted well at the start of the Ellingham reply, adding 47 in 8 overs before Lake was bowled by Fergus Hughes for 26.  A few chances were missed as Spellman continued to punish the bad balls and, at 71-1 with 4 overs left, Ellingham were still in with a chance.  Ryan Howard kept himself and Matt Ling back for the final overs, however, and Howard soon bowled Jasper Trett (11) before getting the vital wicket of Spelman, superbly caught by Finlay Hughes for 25.  As hard as Ellingham tried, there just weren’t enough loose balls and Ling picked up 3 wickets in his final over – two stumped by Kyle Weston – as the innings finished on 86-6.  Howard took 2-9 to go with his 23 runs in a match-winning captain’s performance while Ling took 3-14 and Fergus Hughes 1-10 in his 3 overs.
