A Team Captain; Executive Committee and Senior Cricket Sub-Committee Member; ECB Level 2 Coach; Right-hand batsman; Wicketkeeper
7th in Melton’s all-time appearance list, the man formerly known as ‘Shaggy’ but now frequently referred to as ‘Shafty’ was first team skipper for 5 seasons, leading us to two Norfolk League Division 1 3rd place finishes before spearheading the club’s move to the Norfolk Cricket Alliance. While his batting has played second fiddle to his wicket-keeping throughout his Melton career he did hold the club’s record partnership of 244 (with James Hipperson) for 24 years until Sam Mann and Joey Greenslade eclipsed it in 2017. Although he has shown himself to be more than capable of chipping in with valuable runs or resolute defence when required, his real skill has been as a wicketkeeper with the familiar cry of ‘Shafty’s under it!’ usually the prelude to another victim – 451 in total making him 2nd in the wicketkeeping hall of fame, behind Mike Phoenix. He is, though, the record holder for the most stumpings – 109. In 2016 Shafty took over from Lee Whiddett as A Team skipper and, although the As were relegated that season they’ve comfortably held their own in NCA Division 5 ever since. He’s been a regular ’tourist’ and an excellent Clubman. It was Shafty who initially set up and managed the club’s website and, as an accomplished lead guitarist with ‘The Cream Horns’, he’s entertained us at Presentation Dinners and Beer Festivals. Having obtained his ECB Level 2 Coaching Qualification in 2010, and with his sons now involved in the junior section, Simon has also returned to Friday night coaching and assisting with junior matches.
