Rawson Stars as Runcton Overhaul A’s Low Score

Great Melton A 115 a/o ( 4pts ) lost to North Runcton A 117 / 6 ( 21pts ) by 4 wickets at Melton Park in the Norfolk Alliance Division 4

Great Melton A team’s season started with a superbly observed minute’s silence for our long serving, and much loved President, Andy Seeley.

It then continued under bright skies with a turgid display, as the visitors employed a tight ring field, with everyone inside the 30 yrd circle. Gaps were limited, runs almost more so. Neal Clarke scored at less than a run an over, making 18 in a long vigil as wickets fell around him. Only Tony Alborough (10) made double figures, before a late blitz by Marcus Mawby, who survived being bowled in Rawson’s 10th over (one too many) and was then reprieved again as Webb watched a simple catch go begging in the re-started over, making a spirited 25. Extras boosted the meagre total to 115.  Rawson missed out on a well deserved 5-fer for Runcton. Belcher and Cubbitt conceded just 10 runs between them in their 12 overs.

Leo de Salis (9-6-5-1) delivered a controlled and parsimonious spell which had the hosts hoping for a remarkable victory. Marcus Mawby took 2 early wickets and was followed by debutant Matt Henderson, leaving the west Norfolk outfit struggling at 34-4. Man of the Match Rawson (29*) backed up his bowling display with an assured batting performance, ably supported by Belcher (29), to put together a match winning 66 run partnership as the heavens grew progressively blacker and thunder rolled. Neal Clarke snaffled 2 late wickets but the total to defend was too low to make any real difference beyond giving the home side another point. 30 extras, mainly wides, had proven far too costly.

There were signs of optimism, and with availability set to improve at first team level, Simon Woods’ tenure as A team skipper should witness more rewarding afternoons.
