Old Catton too Strong for Melton C

GREAT MELTON C (7 points) lost to OLD CATTON A (26 points) by 74 runs at Catton Rec. in the Norfolk League Division 4

It's been unfortunate for Melton C that both fixtures against Old Catton A have coincided with the Catton 1st team not having a match.  It has meant that Catton have twice fielded teams strengthened by players who normally compete at the top end of Alliance Division 6 and that has proved just too much for Melton's mix of youngsters and ageing veterans.  Jake Fossey, with 67 and 2-3 made a major contribution to Old Catton's victory, sharing an opening partnership of 46 with T.Betts (16) and a second wicket stand of 86 with Dominic Prime.  When he was out, caught by Simon Carding at mid-on off Craig Woolrich, Catton were well-placed at 132-2 off 23 overs.  Paul Prime added 37 and P.Anderton an unbeaten 28 but Fossey's dismissal enabled Melton's bowlers to slow the scoring rate a little.  Woolrich, in his first appearance of a season dogged by injury, took 3-48 off his 8 overs, there was a wicket apiece for Luke Marchant (1-25) and Daniel Hayward (10-1-44-1) while skipper Simon Carding was the stand-out bowler with figures of 12-3-45-3.

Catton's total of 224-8 looked a daunting one and Melton's task became even harder when Alex Rennie and Ben Carding were both dismissed for ducks.  Tim Hales hit some fine shots in his 28 and with Craig Woolrich contributing 32 and Sam Stuart 18, Melton were still in with a chance at drinks with the score on 120-5 off 23 overs.  Jake Fossey came on to remove both Steve Phoenix (9) and Daniel Hayward (4) lbw and, when Sam Carding was bowled by Warren Fossey for 12, any outside chance of getting close to Catton's total disappeared. Last pair Luke Marchant and Simon Carding eked out a few more overs before Marchant was caught at slip and Melton were all out for 150.
