Mike Phoenix

Groundsman; Executive Committee & Ground Sub-Committee Member; Village Hall Management Committee Member; Right-handed batsman; Wicketkeeper (retired)

Mike, Mikey or Mick is the Groundsman and, as such, one of the most important members of the club. Upset him at your peril!  Formerly nicknamed “snapper” but now affectionately known as “the grumpy groundsman” Mike is a founder-member and club stalwart who hung up his gloves as the end of the 2009 season, having played 634 games for Melton spanning 35 years. First team wicket-keeper until 2000, he has claimed a record 573 victims (466 caught, 107 stumped). After he dropped down to the A Team, Mike enjoyed one of the highlights of his career at Swaffham where he scored his first-ever 50. He has won the Clubman of the Year Shield on numerous occasions and has Norfolk League medals for Divisions 1, 2 (two), 3, 4 and 6 (twice) as well as 3 League Cup winners medals. He was well known in Norfolk in the 70s and 80s as one of the best goalkeepers in the county while playing for Wymondham Old Boys and Wymondham Sunday.  He does occasionally make a cameo cricketing appearance in the Patron’s XI V Legends XI match, usually treating us to a masterful display of wicketkeeping.   He lives opposite the ground at Garden House and nobody works harder for the club.  The immaculate condition of Melton Park is testimony to his expertise.  The jokes about the ‘grumpy groundsman’ hiding junior cricket balls and preferring the ground when no cricket is being played on it are only partly true! Recently retired, he now has even more time to tend his beloved Melton Park and the club certainly couldn’t manage without him.  In 2013 he tried his hand at a new skill – mole-catching – and some say he’s even better at that than he was at cricket ball catching!  He’s also the only club member who has, so far, been on EVERY tour!  He’s a true club “legend” and a volunteer extraordinaire!
