Melton stumble at North Runcton

Martyn Cook papered over the cracks of an abject batting display against North Runcton ‘A' but Melton managed to defend a modest total to take more points from the game than they really deserved.
Melton lost the toss so batted first and their innings got off to the worst possible start when Alex Cooper was bowled by Belcher for 1 and Dave Allum by Coote for 0.  Marcus Godbold (15) set about rebuilding the innings with Richard Wood (35) but Melton were unable to build a significant partnership and when Godbold was caught and bowled by Major and then Rice was run out for 0, the visitors were in trouble at 56 for 5.  Martyn Cook got his side out of a hole however with a quick fire half century that featured 3 sixes and 5 fours but when he fell there were still to few runs on the board to comfortably defend.  However a very valuable 32 from Daryl Godbold batting at 9 took the total to 193, which at the very least gave Melton something to bowl at.  Major was the pick of Runcton's bowlers taking 5 for 62.
Richard Waddell and Nick Gristwood shared the new ball and the former made the break through in the 3rd over when he bowled  T Coote for 6 and then picked up Fountain for 0, courtesy of a very sharp catch by Marcus Godbold at second slip.  Mark Scott picked up the wicket of B Coote in his first over and then struck again to remove Favelowitz in his second over thanks to a smart piece of work behind the stumps from Richard Wood.  At 52 for 4 Melton sensed victory but Belcher played well for a half century that steared his side towards victory but when Mark Scott removed Rawlings for 31 and then Belcher was brilliantly stumped by Wood off the bowling of Gristwood, Runcton seemed content to edge towards the draw.  Excellent bowling at the end of the innings from Harris and Gristwood saw 2 more wickets fall and in the end, despite some fine late hitting from Bunting (32) the home side closed on 187 for 8 and secured a 90% losing draw.
