Melton defeated at Beef Meadow

Great Melton's First Team's truncated start to the season got underway with a disappointing and heavy defeat away to Beccles in Norfolk Alliance Division 2.  Missing several key players Melton's batting collapsed as they were skittled out for just 54 with only debutant James Shipley reaching double figures.

Earlier things had looked promising for the visitors; Mark Scott won the toss and invited Beccles to bat and at 9 for 3 Melton were very much in the ascendancy after some tidy bowling from Bettridge and Scott.  However Beccles slowly made their way back in to the game with some patient and watchful batting, something that Melton were unable to replicate later.  Beccles Captain Rob Porter made and excellent 60 and despite decent bowling from Scott, Bettridge, Greenslade and Harris, the Melton fielding that had begun in a lively fashion deteriorated as some crucial catches went down.  At tea Beccles had made 153 for 9 – Mark Scott was Melton's most successful bowler taking 3 for 32.

Although the home side perhaps made 20 or 30 more than they should have done, Melton should still have made a better fist of the chase.  In truth all of the Melton top order gave their wickets away save for Richard Wood who was bowled by a beauty from the lively Alex Wright and with the trend of questionable umpiring decisions continuting, the game was all but up in the 23 over with Melton at 32 for 7.  Spirited batting from the tail did little more than prolong the inevitable and in the end Beccles were good value for their win.
