Mason’s an Ace ‘un for Melton A

GREAT MELTON A (25pts) beat NORWICH B (0 pts) by 9 wickets at Postwick in Division 5 of the Norfolk Cricket Alliance on Saturday 5th May 2018.

Great Melton's A Team made the perfect start to their division 5 campaign, with a resounding 9 wicket win over a slightly under strength Norwich B side.

Melton Skipper Simon Woods opted to bowl first on a still slightly damp surface and that decision was rewarded twice in only the second over of the day, when Kyle Mason (3-21) removed the dangerous Jamie Bradford & his opening partner Cook. From there on, wickets fell at regular intervals. Debutant Josh Wright (1-27) got himself on the board, as did his father, Chris (2-6), but the pick of the bowlers were MOTM Mason & James Robb (3-27). Marcus Mawby's extra pace finished things off in the 35th over.

On a day when Melton held almost all of their catches, only Norwich skipper Steve Clarke offered any resistance, striking an impressive, unbeaten 53 as his team folded around him.

In reply, Melton openers Jason Whiddett & Woody Loines were initially watchful, taking due care not to repeat the mistakes of the first innings. Once settled, Loines in particular began to attack & it was unfortunate that he was out on 48, trying for his 50 with only 9 required for victory. Whiddett carried his bat with a steady 24 and brought up the win in the 26th over.

Sterner tests await, but it was a pleasing way to belatedly start the season.
