League Leaders Too Strong For Melton C

GREAT MELTON C (6 points) lost to COLNEY (25 points) by 86 runs at Eaton CNS in the Lucas & Fettes Norfolk League Division 5

Despite a fine all-round performance from Jake Mardell, Division 5 leaders, Colney, proved just too strong for Melton C whose bowlers was wholly responsible for for the 6 points gained from a 86-run defeat. Chasing Colney's 210-6, Melton slumped to 11-4 and 19-5 and, for a time, it looked as though they might be bowled out for a lowest-ever total but, after Steve Phoenix (15) became the 6th batsmen dismissed with the score on 36, Mardell hung around for 20 overs scoring a patient 41. He received good support from Luke Marchant (8), Daniel Hayward (11) and, especially Leo DeSalis (21 not out) as the pair added 50 for the 9th wicket, a new C Team record. In fact, after a terrible start, Melton did well to bat out the 45 overs, finishing on 124-9 as DeSalis and Peter Frazer (2 not out) survived the final overs.

Earlier the same five players, Mardell (2-52), DeSalis (1-38), Hayward (2-63), Marchant (1-27) and Frazer (0-26) had bowled well against a Colney side that showed plenty of depth in their batting. Opener Jack Dainty and James Rouse scored 53 although both were a little fortunate to survive strong appeals earlier in their innings. Acting skipper Tony Alborough fiddled with the field in an attempt to stem the flow of runs and his bowlers responded well until some powerful hitting at the end from Burrell (39) and Holvey (24 in 2 overs) took the home team over 200. Without Mally Howard and Steve Clarke, however, Melton's batting looked a little brittle and so it was to prove.
