Last Ball Win For Mighty Under 9s

GREAT MELTON U9s beat SWARDESTON U9s by 4 runs in the John Dewing Competition

With 4 runs scored from the last ball of the match, Gt Melton under 9s recorded their fourth successive win in the Norfolk Alliance at home to Swardeston. The visitors won the toss and decided to bat. Despite accurate bowling by Corey Rushton and Harrison Cunningham, the openers moved the score to 234 for the loss of one wicket. Some tremendous fielding by the Gt Melton team placed the batters under pressure. In his first match for the club Francis Wilson dived full length to stop a certain 4. In doing so the ball bounced off his hand and into his face. Francis left the field for first aid but with great determination soon returned to bowl. Wibur King, Ethan Ellis and William Bailey made some vital stops and accurate throwing by Louis Armstrong Brown resulted in a run out. Swardeston finished on 284 for 4, a net score of 268.

Swaedeston's bowling was accurate and claimed 3 wickets in the first 4 overs. It looked as if a win was slipping away, but with Ethan scoring12 not out and then James Cooper hitting 16 not out, the initiative swung in Gt Melton's favour. The last pair of Corey and Francis needed to score 25 from the final 4 overs. Swardeston took 2 quick wickets which built the pressure on the batters. Powerful shots by Corey (20) and impressive running by Francis(5) meant the scores were level with one ball to play. Swardeston set their field to prevent a single and with the tension building Cory faced the final ball. No quick single this time, he pulled the ball to the square leg boundary to win the match with Gt Melton finishing on 292 for 5 , a net score of 272.
