Jonathan Ellse

Level 2 (Ladies) Coach; Right-hand batsman; Right-arm (occasional) bowler

Jonathan joined Great Melton at the beginning of the 2013 season.  A South African who had just moved to Wymondham with his wife Trish, it wasn’t long before he acquired the nickname “Ernie”.   His job in the leisure business restricted him largely to Sunday matches in his first season but he topped the averages to win the Sunday Player-of-the-Year Trophy.  Having played against some of South Africa’s top cricketers in his early days, before injury took its toll, he showed that he was still a class act and, following a change in shift patterns then a change of job, he turned in some good performances for both the A and 1st Teams in 2014 but the old injuries kept recurring and he was forced to ‘retire’.  In 2018 and 2019 he made a tentative comeback for the C Team where he proved a class above everyone else at that level winning the C Team Player of the Year award in 2018 and 2019 and the Norfolk League Division 4SE Batsman of the Year award last season.   Ernie has also been helping to coach the ladies for the last 3 years and, with wife Trish taking over as manager and daughter Megan playing, he has now qualified as an ECB Level 2 Course.  With his body having withstood the rigours of a full season in 2019 it is hoped Ernie will return to a level befitting his talent in 2021.
