Joes Perform Well in C Team Defeat

GREAT MELTON C (6 points) lost to NEW BUCKENHAM (24 points) by 63 runs at Town Close in the Lucas & Fettes Norfolk League Division 5

Despite a brave 31 from 13-year-old Joe Greenslade and a good all-round display from another young Joe – Joe Bickel – an understrength Great Melton C lacked the depth of batting needed to chase down New Buckenham's 191-6, losing by 63 runs. Having decided to field first, Melton's Stuart Wilson and Jack McCurley conceded only 19 runs off the first 12 overs and things looked good when Luke Marchant then had opener Dalton well-caught at short mid-off by Steve Phoenix. The patient Heasman (25) and a more belligerant Wooldridge, however, took the score to 85, Wooldridge plundering some runs off the spinners, Bickel and Peter Frazer who struggled with his line and length, his 4 overs going for 43. Eventually Wooldridge was brilliantly run out by Marchant for 51. Wilson (12-1-37-2) and McCurley (12-3-30-1) both returned to put the brakes on the scoring, although Bickel's 1-45 from 10 overs was a very good effort and the visitors eventually posted 191-6, Taylor finishing unbeaten on 38. The Buckenham total was helped by 42 extras!

Melton's reply started promisingly enough with Mally Howard (16) and Greenslade adding 47 runs even though the youngster was hampered by a groin strain. There weren't to many quick singles either when Greenslade was joined by Fawad Kaiser (12) and, when Kaiser was out, the scoring all but dried up for a few overs. Greenslade was eventually caught off Dalton for a well-made 31 and, with Phoenix (4) getting himself out trying to push the score along, it exposed a rather longer-than-usual ‘tail'. Bickel batted patiently for his 21 but Marchant, Dave Bickel, McCurley and Clive Gristwood all went cheaply as Melton ended on 128-9, Wilson and Frazer surviving the final few balls.
