Impressive Senior Debut for Rennie in Friendly Defeat

GREAT MELTON lost to Eaton by 5 wickets at CNS in a friendly.
Great Melton's usual mixture of B and C Team players took on old friends Eaton for the annual pre-season warm-up game but, despite an impressive debut performance from Alex Rennie who scored an excellent 43, Melton lost by 5 wickets.  13-year-old Rennie, making his first appearance for a Melton senior team hit 6 boundaries in a mature 70-ball knock and featured in a 68-run 4th wicket partnership with Chris Elliott (29).  Toby Wyatt's 30 had got Melton off to a good start before they lost 3 quick wickets then, with the dismissals of Elliott and Rennie, Jon Moxon (20) and Steve Phoenix (16), Simon Carding (10 not out) and Leo DeSalis (9 not out) nudged the total to 167-9.  Luke Billington was the most impressive of the Eaton bowlers with 12-4-37-3 but there were wickets for Rob Duke (1-39), Michael Barker (2-10) and Neil Barker (1-15).
Melton looked well on course for victory when opening bowlers Luke Marchant and Leo DeSalis reduced the home side to 58-4 with Michael Barker (8), Graham Brackenbury (15), Sam Butcher (20) and Matt Duke (3) all dismissed.  When Rob Duke was run out for 13 at 72-5 it looked even bleaker for Eaton but Neil Barker and Billington forged a 97-run partnership that took their side to victory.  Barker was dropped a few times but batted well for his 65 not out while Billington, after a diligent start, opened out to score a fine 36 not out.  DeSalis was the pick of the Melton bowlers with figures of 12-2-26-3.  Young Marchant bowled very well in his first spell of 5-0-22-1 but struggled into the wind in his second while another debutant, Aussie Sam Stuart bowled some very quick deliveries in a promising 6-over spell.
