Home Sweet Home as Smith & Hayward Bowl C Team to Victory

GREAT MELTON C (25 points) beat FRETTENHAM (2 points) by 7 wickets at Town Close in the Lucas & Fettes Norfolk League Division 5

After a disappointing result the previous week at Garboldisham, Great Melton C returned home to Town Close and kept their unbeaten record there intact with a 7-wicket victory over ten-man Frettenham. Young bowler Tom Smith was the Melton match-winner with figures of 5-2-7-4 as the visitors were bowled out for just 44. Frettenham were struggling for players with a wedding and Sam Kelly and his dad – their captain – at the ‘Britains Got Talent' final and their cause wasn't helped when they lost the toss and were asked to bat on a damp wicket. Daniel Hayward got Melton off to a good start with an opening spell of 6-4-3-2 before Smith and Stuart Wilson (6-3-10-1) ripped out the middle order, helped by some good fielding that included an excellent catch and stumping by Tim Hales and run-out by Freddie Burgess. Opener P.Norton defended stubbornly and was eventually last man out, bowled by Leo DeSalis' second ball, for a top score of just 15.

The skippers decided to take tea after 15 overs of Melton's innings but, at that point, Frettenham were enjoying some success with Steve Clarke (1), Burgess (5) and Mally Howard (7) all back in the pavilion and Melton struggling at 29-3. The decision was made to play on and, 4 overs later, Melton had won, Hales (10 not out) and Graeme Button (14 not out) comfortably seeing Melton home. Despite the rain, the Town Close ground looked a picture thanks to the efforts of groundman Chris King and the wicket certainly held no demons. It was simply a case of the visitors not batting very well against three young bowlers in Hayward, Smith and Wilson who bowled straight and exploited the conditions very well.
