Green Keeps His Cool to See U13s to Victory

GREAT MELTON U13s (10 points) beat GREAT ELLINGHAM U13s (6 points) by 7 runs at Ellingham in the South Norfolk Community League

Melton U13s came very close to losing their unbeaten South Norfolk Community League record at Great Ellingham who almost chased down Melton's imposing 138-2.  Good bowling at the death by Finlay Hughes and Charlie Green especially, however, prevented Ellingham from scoring the 17 needed off the final two overs and Charlie bowled Loades with the final ball as Melton won by 7 runs.

Earlier Saxon Earley (40) and Finlay Hughes (42) had smashed a succession of boundaries and both retired unbeaten as Melton raced to 90 off the first 7 overs.  Things slowed down a little after that although Olly Black hit some excellent shots in his 29 and further retirements ensured Melton, with Daniel Lievers making his debut and Zak Ashdown and Ezra Leverett  enjoying rare opportunities, were able to use all 8 batsmen.  The final total of 138 looked challenging enough.

Hughes and Green bowled an accurate opening spell and things looked good for Melton when 2 run outs and a good catch by Earley off Hughes left Ellingham at 15-3 but Goodrum and Harding launched an blistering attack on Melton's change bowlers.  By the time Goodrum retired with 40 the home side had a good chance of winning and with Bunn hitting 4 successive 4s the momentum was with Ellingham.  Olly Black (2-0-10-0) stemmed the flow and, when Zak Ashdown bowled Harding as he tried to hit the boundary that would have taken him past 40, the game was in the balance. Hughes (3-0-17-1) and Green (3-0-10-1) kept their cool, though, and Melton scraped through.
