Grant Puts Melton On The Winning Track

Great Melton (15 points) beat Mundford (0 points) by 8 wickets at Mundford in the Norfolk Alliance Division 3

No doubt there will be tougher tests ahead for Melton, but after the modest returns of the 2016 season, there were promising signs all round in this less then competitive encounter at Mundford. With the home team a little depleted, Skipper Oliver Harris won a good toss and inserted Mundford who struggled from the outset with good lines bowled by both Waddell and Grant. The latter in particular moved the ball both ways, and caused endless problems for Mundford’s early order. He finished with 3 for 14 from his 8 overs, the pick of the deliveries being the one to remove Philips, Mundford’s burly all rounder, that pitched just outside leg stump and hit middle and off. Much to his credit, Philips departed by giving Grant (Meltons’s star performer) a ‘high five’ as reward for his endeavours!

The only real resistance mustered was by Crowcamp, who hit beautifully through the ball to notch up 3 sixes in quick succession before Rennie cleverly adjusted his line to have him caught on the boundary. The champagne moment quickly followed as Tim Hales ran out Hill from the boundary with a direct hit. The rest followed as Mundford’s resolution evaporated, leaving Melton 81 to win the game. Both Rennie and MacKenzie finished with 3 wickets each.

What followed was relatively uneventful, as the Melton top order progressed steadily to the required total. Wood top scored with 26, whilst Clarke finished with a typically energetic 24 not out. Two wickets for Philips of Mundford meant that Melton finished with 24 points. Even the sun shone on a bright and promising start to the season.
