Girl-Power Ensures a Winning Start for U9s

GREAT MELTON U9s beat NORWICH U9s by 56 runs at Great Melton in the South Norfolk Community League

Melton's Poppy Bugg and Alice Brand captured 8 Norwich wickets for just 8 runs as the Under 9s started the season with a 56-run win over Norwich.  Poppy, playing her first-ever match, took 2 wickets in the first over of the Norwich innings and went on to take 5-5 while Alice weighed in with 3-3 from her 3 overs as Norwich were left floundering on 159-12, a net score of 99. This was despite some excellent batting from their second pair, Jack Boyd (11 not out) and Oliver Collins (15 not out).  With captain George Alcock contributing 3 sharp stumpings, a direct-hit run out from Owen Ward and further wickets for Jack Joice, Sanjit Alanoor  and Archie McKay, it was a very good bowling and fielding display from Melton.

After losing 5 first-pair wickets Norwich never looked likely to chase down Melton's 170-3 (net 155) built on a good partnership involving some excellent running and calling from Owen Ward (5) and William Joyner (5), careful batting from Jack, Sanjit and the girls and some excellent hitting and scampering from 3rd pair George (12 not out) and Archie (3 not out).  It was all-in-all a positive start to the season.

The match was mistakenly played according to John Dewing (Alliance) rules but it was a South Norfolk Community League fixture with slightly different rules: teams starting with 100 (instead of 200), 5 runs deducted for wickets (instead of 4) and wides & no-balls counting as 1 (instead of 2).  The scores have been adjusted accordingly.

Thanks to Martin Alcock for managing and umpiring and to Phil Bugg for scoring.
