First Defeat for Under 13s

A strong Swardeston side inflicted the first defeat of the season on the Great Melton U13 side by 5 wickets.

Swardeston invited Melton to bat on a drying wicket and it was slow going against accurate bowling early on. A Jack Gorman cut to the boundary accelerated the scoring before he was run out. Finlay Hughes also cut to the boundary before he was stumped by Zak Taylor. Pat Walton pulled the first delivery he faced for 6 though then was the first victim, lbw, of the match turning first over of Tom Bailey. He also bowled Josh Wright and deflected a throw onto the stumps to run out Sam Johnson.
When Oli Leinster departed in Tom Bailey's next over, it looked at though the game would be over quickly with Melton rocking on 31 for 6. However, James Carter joined Saxon Earley in a last wicket partnership of 41 runs in 5 overs. James pulled a high full toss for 6 and also hit 2 other boundaries, driving the ball with increasing confidence until he was bowled for 25 in the final over. The Melton innings closed on 72 all out from 15.3 overs

The Swardeston batsmen also found it hard going against accurate Melton bowling. Finlay Hughes bowled well delivering 3 overs for 10 and, with tight fielding, only 46 came from the first 10 overs. However, Zak Taylor was severe on any short deliveries with a six and 3 fours in his innings before he retired on reaching 30.  Oli Leinster and Sam Johnson showed that slower, full length bowling could tie the batsmen down somewhat with a combined 3 overs for 9 runs.

Pat Walton's final over proved eventful with 2 dropped catches before he bowled Tom Bailey and S Grisewood was run out trying to take a second run on Jack Gorman's arm.  However, Elliot Fox, who batted through for 17 not out, and Ezra Khan saw the visitors home to 73-2 after 15.3 overs.
