Final Over Drama as Corey Keeps Calm to Defeat Swardeston
GREAT MELTON U11s beat SWARDESTON U11s by 2 runs at Melton Park in the Alliance Terry Moore Competition
Under 11 Captain Corey Rushton stayed composed under pressure to lead the U11s to a narrow win over neighbours and rivals Swardeston. With 36 runs still needed when last pair Corey and Sam Davey came to the wicket, it looked a tall order but some audacious shots that included a Dilscoop from Corey plus excellent running kept Melton in touch. The run out of Sam was a setback but, with one over to go, the rain becoming more persistent and 16 still needed the visitors, still looked to be favourites. However a very long over that saw a series of no-balls and wides, more mad-cap singles and a terrific shot for 4 from Corey meant that, with 3 legitimate balls left, Melton had edged in front. Melton’s skipper then blocked the final three deliveries and Melton were victorious by 2 runs.
Melton’s other key player in a fine team effort was Harrison Cunningham who took 3-11 in his 3 overs then scored 22 runs.
Swardeston totalled 306-5, a net total of 276 with Harry Thomas (27), Daniel Kenyon (10 not out), Lucas Pentazis (13 not out) and Jack Garner (17) the main contributors with Jamie Granville (3-0-21-1) the other wicket-taker. Ben Gaskin (12) and Will Bailey (2) and Cunningham and James Cooper (4) then ensured there were no dismissals in the first 8 overs as Melton got off to a good start. Swardeston came back with 3 quick wickets, though, to leave the game in the balance and set up that dramatic last over as Melton edged to 302-4 a net total of 278.
