ECB Semi-Final Defeat for U13s

GREAT MELTON U13s lost to HORSFORD U13s by 5 runs at Manor Park in the ECB Semi-Final

An entertaining and topsy-turvey ECB Semi-Final ended with Great Melton U13s falling just 6 runs short of victory.  Chasing Horsford's 20-over score of 119-4, Melton recovered from losing Josh Wright (6) and Ben Granville in the first 3 overs as Finlay Hughes and Pat Walton set about the Horsford bowlers.  The pair played a mixture of classy and powerful shots as the score raced to 80 in 9 overs, each bowled by a different bowler, before Walton was forced to retire having reached 30 followed quickly by Hughes who moved to 33 with a straight-driven four.  With 11 overs to score 39 runs Melton looked firmly in control but, although Jack Gorman (15) and Sam Johnson (7) ran well, the boundaries rather dried up and, with Horsford's better bowlers returning, the scoring rate crept up.  However, with 5 overs to go and with Melton needing just 3 an over to win, Horsford's pressure finally told.  Gorman, Johnson, James Bridges (0) and Charlie Green (1) fell to Callum Metcalf, Billy Harvey and Ethan Metcalf, leaving Lohit Kannan and Jack Williamson with just too much to do.  Needing a six off the last ball Lohit was run out and Horsford celebrated a victory that looked very unlikely at the half-way stage of the Melton innings.

Horford's innings had followed a similar pattern to Melton's with the home side scoring 75 off the first 9 overs and just 44 of the next 11.  A good catch by Pat Walton dismissed the dangerous Dani Long-Martinez (16) but County players Callum Metcalf (32 retired) and Will Hollis (run out for 30) batted well at the top of the order before tight bowling, particularly from Lohit (4-0-18-0), Ben Granville (2-0-7-0) and Charlie Green (3-0-11-0) late on, plus some good fielding that brought three run outs, saw Horsford restricted to 119.  It was a total Melton probably should have reached given the good platform built by Walton and Hughes but they did play a big part in a hugely enjoyable game of cricket.
