Defeat For U13s at Acle in Alliance Quarter-Final

GREAT MELTON U13s lost to ACLE U13s by 2 wickets at Acle in the Alan Bridgewater Cup Quarter-Final.

Despite scoring a 117, only losing 1 wicket and claiming 5 Acle wickets, Melton U13s exited the Alliance's Alan Bridgewater Cup at the quarter-final stage. The home side's Dan Hastings proved the difference between two evenly-matched teams as he, and opening partner Nathan Shaw got Acle's run chase off to a blistering start.  Melton's first 6 overs yielded 60 runs before Hastings retired having reached 30.  Shaw also retired soon after and, although good bowling by Ben Granville (3-0-20-3) in particular, saw wickets start to fall and the scoring rate decrease, Melton were always struggling to recover from the early onslaught.  When Pat Walton caught and bowled last man Eddy Mann, there were still 2 overs left and Hastings was able to return to the wicket to hit the winning runs, finishing on 38 not out.

Earlier Melton had batted well to score 117-1 off their 16 overs with Saxon Earley once again providing the impetus to the innings with 31 off 21 balls before retiring at the end of the 7th over with the score on 46.  Finlay Hughes also retired having scored his 30 off 34 balls faced and, with Jack Gorman (9 not out) providing good support, Walton's quick-fire 25 (off 12 balls) saw Melton pose what looked a challenging total. Unfortunately the bowlers couldn't quite find their customary control and Acle's County players showed their class, finding the gaps in the field and punishing anything loose to win with 11 balls to spare.
