Chris McKay

Fixture Secretary; ECB Level 2 Coach; U11s Manager; Senior Cricket, Junior & Finance Sub-Committee Member; Right-hand batsman; right-arm bowler

A volunteer extraordinaire, Chris undertakes wide variety of roles within the club having added the role of Fixture Secretary to that of U11s Coach & Manager and member of the Finance team.  He was born in Dubbo, New South Wales, Glen McGrath’s home town, but came to England in 2001 to work in London where he met his wife Lucy, a Norfolk girl.  Faced with a choice of moving back to Australia or settling down in Norfolk, Chris choose the latter. Having played cricket at school, he looked around for a club and, after ‘googling’ ‘cricket club’s near Norwich’ his search threw up – surprise, surprise – Norwich!  Chris played for the club for six years, captaining the third team for the last three and playing against Great Melton six times.  Living in Barford and travelling to Ingham for ‘home’ games and, with sons Sam and Archie showing an interest in cricket, Chris sought a club nearer home and decided to pledge his allegiance to Melton.  He has proved to be a valuable acquisition both on and off the pitch.  For two seasons Chris played mainly for the B Team, but a back injury in 2013 plus other commitments meant that Chris hardly played at all in the between 2012 and 2015.  In 2016 he scored a memorable 99 to help the C Team pull victory from the jaws of defeat at Garboldisham and he has continued to play, mainly in the B or C Team when family commitments have allowed.  in 2018 Chris coached and managed the U9s and, having taken undertaken the ECB Level 2 coaching course last Spring, he moved up to manage the U11s in 2020, becoming one of a small team who managed to deliver coaching sessions and a programme of matches, despite the restrictions of Covid19.
