GREAT MELTON B (21 points) beat AYLSHAM ST GILES (8 points) by 6 runs at Aylsham Rec in the Lucas & Fettes Norfolk League Division 2

In their closest game of the season so far, Great Melton B defeated Aylsham St Giles by just 6 runs in a low scoring game. Having been invited to bat first on a ‘difficult' wicket Melton made slow progress in the first 20 overs accumulating only 50 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. Steve Clarke (26) batted well before Simon Brett (40) and Tim Hales (16) produced a partnership of 43. Skipper David Bunn (23) accelerated the scoring rate before chasing a wide delivery to be caught in the gulley and thereafter the innings fell away and concluded on 149 all out in the 44th over. On a wicket were batsmen never really felt in and with a slow outfield Melton were confident they could defend their modest total.

After tea ball continued to dominate the bat however without wickets falling. At 20 overs Aylsham were 57-0 with Gary Coulson (0-14) and Tom Smith (0-37) both bowling well. Bunn picked up the vital wicket of Bingham lbw but Aylsham continued to bat solidly and moved to 96-1 of 30 overs. With Chris Wright injured whilst bowling Melton turned to Jake Mardell(1-24) and Craig Woolrich (2-21) and both bowled extremely well, assisted by committed fielding and a vital run out from the hobbling Wright. With the game still in the balance Melton suffered a further setback with Neal Clarke forced to leave the field with an Achilles injury. However, the 45th over started with Aylsham needing 12 to win and it eventually came down to 7 off the last ball and Melton ran out deserved winners – a very pleasing result given the wicket, outfield and injury problems experienced during the course of the game.
