Ben Johnson

Right-hand batsman; Right-arm seam bowler

Grandson of the groundsman, Ben has cricket in the blood and has been seen around Melton Park almost all his life.  He joined the U9s coaching group, back in 2012 as an U7 and has represented the junior section at all levels from U9s to U19s before making his C Team debut as a 13-year-old in 2018.  He was U9s Player-of-the-Year in 2014, won the U11 Award in 2016, the U13s Coaches Award in 2017 and the U13s Player-of-the-Year award in 2018.  In 2019, our last full season, he added the U15 Coaches award to his trophy cabinet and completed a ‘full set’ when he was voted Young (U17) Player-of-the-Year, having taken 28 wickets, many at senior level.  He also has two County cups in his impressive C.V. having helped the U11s win the Terry Moore Trophy in 2014 and the U15s win the Andy Seeley Trophy in 2018. While his bowling his biggest asset he’s also a safe catcher and a useful batsman and scored 39 in a new record C Team partnership of 113 with his great-uncle, the Chairman, in 2019.  Ben's decision not to play in 2020 surprised everybody but we're hoping he'll re-discover his love for the game and and continue his remarkable progress in 2021.
