Batting Collapse as C’s Lose Again
Great Melton C seem to be developing a worryingly nasty habit of turning match-winning positions into defeats! Having bowled out Garboldisham C for 117, Melton produced their worst batting performance of the season to be dismissed for a paltry 53.
With the heavy rain the previous week making it a good toss to win for Melton skipper Steve Phoenix, opening bowlers Kyle Weston (7-3-12-1) and Ben Johnson (5-3-15-2) relished the conditions and soon had the home side in trouble. Tommy Ling took advantage of the occasional loose delivery to score 43 but none of the other Garboldisham batsmen stayed long enough to make a substantial contribution as Duncan Greenslade took 5-9 in in his 5 overs. There were wickets for Alice Greenslade (1-18) and Rachael Hustler (1-20) as, helped by 7 excellent catches especially those by Clive Gristwood, Jon Ellse and Steve Phoenix, Garboldisham were dismissed in the 28th over.
With Phoenix fresh from scoring 88 in his previous match and Ellse averaging over 50, Melton felt confident of chasing down 117 but, from the moment Melton’s skipper gloved a rising delivery from Carl Grimwood to the wicket-keeper off the first ball of the innings, the writing was on the wall. Ellse soon followed, lbw for 16 and, apart from Greenslade (16), it became a procession of batsmen back to the pavilion as James Worby took 6-22 in 9 overs. Melton were all out for 53 in the 18th over. That first victory of the season continues to elude them!
