Batsmen in Control as U13s Score 149 Against Tas

GREAT MELTON U13s beat HETHERSETT & TAS VALLEY U13s by 106 runs at Melton Park in the Alan Bridgewater Cup.

A Melton U13 side containing 7 under 12s, produced a brilliant batting performance against a more than competent Tas Valley who were simply overwhelmed by Melton's combination of powerful hitting and excellent running between the wickets.  The unlucky early departure of Josh Wright (1) who played a ball onto his pads and then onto the stumps brought the late-arriving Saxon Earley (delayed by a school match) to the wicket.  He immediately – as he so often does – set the tone for the innings with his aggressive style of batting.  Jack Gorman (16) was a willing partner as the pair ran on everything with Jack eventually taking one risk too many and being run out.  Saxon retired having reached 30 and James Bridges was run out by  a brilliant piece of fielding by Tom Howard but that brought together Sam Johnson and Ben Granville whose partnership of 65 in just 6 overs, included some excellent shots and pushed the score past 100.  Ben retired on 30 and Sam on 33 but Jack Williamson continued the onslaught with 6 runs off the only 2 balls he faced before Earley returned to hit a further 2 fours before becoming a third run-out victim off the last ball.  Melton posed a daunting 149-5 for Tas Valley to chase.

Any outside hopes of the visitors were dashed inside 4 overs as James Bridges (2-0-10-2) and Jack Williamson (2-2-0-2) grabbed 2 wickets apiece.  Ben Davies (9) resisted for a time and Melton pushed up the Tas Valley total with 20 extras, mainly wides, but the visitors' innings eventually ended on 43 all out in the 11th over to give Melton victory by 106 runs.

The U13s have 3 matches next week, against Topcroft (h) on Monday in the SNCL, Diss (h) on Wednesday in the Alan Bridgewater and Horsford (a) on Friday in the ECB Semi-Final, a schedule that is sure to test Manager Clive Gristwood and his large squad.
