Left hand batsman; left arm spin bowler
‘Chalky’ has been with the club since he was 10 years old and, with twin brother Matt, was part of the successful junior squad from U11s to U17s managed by Duncan Greenslade and coached by Simon Carding. In fact the Rennies – Alex, Matt and dad Clive – spend a great deal of time at Melton practising in the nets which is probably why Alex made a seamless transition to senior cricket. In 2013 he played regularly in the C Team and the Sunday A Team, and impressed with his batting, hitting a top score of 49 and taking 11 wickets, including 6-33, with his left-arm spin. Having just missed out on his maiden fifty he eventually achieved it with 56 for the Under 15s. As a junior he had been a SNCL winner in 2010 (U11s), 2013 & 2014 (U15s) and played in Alliance and ECB finals but, with only a season’s senior C Team experience behind him, Chalky played half a season for the As before he was propelled into the 1st Team at the end of the 2014 season, taking 11 wickets in just 4 appearances with a best of 5-35. It won him the ‘Most Improved Player’ award at the Presentation Dinner. In 2015 he continued as a 1st Team regular with 20 wickets at 24 apiece including 5-52 V Saham Toney and 4-24 V Old Buckenham – an excellent season personally considering that the team struggled for most of the campaign and were eventually relegated. In 2016 he continued to bowl with great control & took 21 first-team wickets and a further 6 to help the Midweek Team reach the Hunts Bat Cup Final. A slightly less prolific season in 2017 was followed by a summer with his brother at Saxlingham before Chalky returned to Melton in 2019. He has now back in Norfolk having completed his studies at Sheffield University.
