A ‘Young’ U11s Side Lose At Mulbarton
GREAT MELTON U11s lost to MULBARTON U11s by 6 wickets at Orchard Park in the South Norfolk Community League
With 7 of Melton U11s first-choice squad unavailable, the South Norfolk Community League match against Mulbarton gave Manager, Clive Gristwood the opportunity to play some of the other members of the large U11 squad, including U9s Charlie Green and Lohit Kannan. Although Clive was unexpectedly hospitalised and missed the match, all the boys acquitted themselves very well in scoring 85-4 before Mulbarton’s opening pair Ben Thorpe and J.Webster showed excellent application to time the Mulbarton reply to perfection. They batted for 14 of the 16 overs and, although Webster was eventually bowled by Ezra Leverett for 29, Mulbarton achieved victory with an over to spare, leaving Thorpe unbeaten on 34.
Earlier Josh Wright (27) and Charlie Green (14) had been Melton’s star batsmen and, with Leverett scoring a good 11 not out at the end, Melton were able to post a competitive total. Jack Gorman bowled a superb two-over spell, both of which were maidens, and the spin of Sam Johnson (3-0-15-0) and the fast bowling of Lohit (3-0-17-0) also troubled the Mulbarton openers but they batted very sensibly. While Melton’s bowling was good, the fielding could be improved. There were a number of overthrows and misfields but, considering 5 of the 8 boys are able to play U11s again next season, this was a promising performance.
