9-Wicket Win in Wicklewood Shield
Half-centuries from Matt Rushton & Eusha Fawad enabled Great Melton's Midweek A Team to chase down New Buckenham's 136-5 and win their Wicklewood Shield match by 9 wickets with 4 balls to spare.
Having been invited to bat first, New Buckenham lost and early wicket when Richard Halfacre was sharply stumped by Ansh Mondal off Leo DeSalis' bowling. DeSalis bowled a tight opening 4 overs taking 1-15 and, with Ben Johnson bowling an equally good spell of 3-0-16-1 and bagging the wicket of Ling the visitors were 31-2 off the first 7 overs. Jason Winsor was dropped several times on his way to 38 as Buckenham sought to lift the tempo. He was eventually bowled by James Cooper but, with Nigel Frame (30), he had succeeded in taking the score to 79-3. Some powerful blows late on by George Halfacre (22 not out) and L. Riseborough (16 not out) then ensured the visitors would post a respectable total. Corey Rushton (4-0-24-0) bowled a good 4-over spell and there were 2 wickets for Matt Rushton (3-0-27-2).
The same father-and-son combination opened Melton's innings with Corey hitting two fours before being caught by Ling off Jade Hoyte. Matt, having started slowly, then hit 6 fours in succession as a partnership began to build between him and Eusha Fawad. As confidence grew both batsmen played some fine shots and ran well in an excellent unbroken partnership of 122 as Melton won with a four off the second ball of the final over. Rushton was unbeaten on 62 and Fawad on 56.
Whether or not Melton progress to the semi-final of the Wicklewood Shild now will depend on the result of the New Buckenham V Hardingham game.
