Melton C No Match For Mallards

GREAT MELTON C (5 points) lost to VAUXHALL MALLARDS B (26 points) by 130 runs at Town Close in the Norfolk League Division 4SE

The experienced Marcus Bishop scored 60 and took 6-8 from 7 overs as Vauxhall-Mallards B proved to be too good for Melton C at Town Close.  A side containing several county youngsters and captained by another senior campaigner, Wayne Nixon, won the toss, batted and made Melton's bowlers suffer in the sun as 280 runs were scored.  Bishop and William Woodhead added 103 before Bishop was bowled by Aimee Palmer for 60.  Woodhead made 52 before he was caught by Steve Phoenix to give young Cassie Mawby her first senior wicket.  Her spell of 5-0-24-1 was impressive in the context of the match but, as the overs ticked away, so the momentum gathered pace and Archie Glazebrook (65 not out) and, first, Matt Austin (47) then Matt Seager (17), took any chance of victory away from Melton.  The bowlers toiled away with great spirit on a hot afternoon and it was good to see Pat Walton back in action, another catch by Phoenix giving him his first wicket for almost 2 years.  All the Melton players but particularly youngsters Harry Ryan and Olly Leary worked hard in the field.

Melton showed the same spirit in their reply with Michael Wormstone and Phoenix (16) taking the score to 58 before the Melton skipper was given out lbw.  Aimee Palmer was run out for 12 but, thereafter, it was left to Wormstone to provide stubborn resistance.  No others made double figures as Bishop came on to bowl and batsmen came and went.  When Wormstone was eventually 7th batsman out after making his maiden 50 for the club, Bishop mopped up the tail to bring him excellent figures of 7-2-8-6.  Seager (10-2-28-1) and off-spinner Archie Bradnock (8-2-22-0) also bowled well for little reward.  There was just 1 over remaining when Melton's innings ended on 150.
