A depleted Great Melton A side but outclassed at North Runcton but there were positives in the performances of young A team debutants Connor Stearman, Tom Moye and Alex Tonnison.
Put into bat on what looked a flat wicket, an A side that looked short on batting strength might have feared the worst. But Damien Loines and 17 year old Connor Stearman, making his first A team appearance, added 47 for the first wicket in 15 overs to provide an important platform. Loines departed for 7, before Lee Whiddett and Stearman took the score to 75 in the 23rd over when Whiddett played on for 9. Stearman was, however, looking in fine touch on his way to an impressive 39 featuring 7 fours.
Unfortunately Stearman followed Whiddett back without further addition, and when Jon Moxon and Steve Clarke quickly followed, Melton were wobbling at 91-5 from 29 overs.
Chris Mckay made a useful 14 before youngsters Joe Bickel and Alex Tonnison combined to add 40 for the seventh wicket, with Bickel in particular playing nicely for 31. Tonnison, on A team debut, made 21 as Melton closed on 166-9. It looked a well below par score, but one that Melton were reasonably happy with given their depleted line up.
The score was to prove entirely insufficient, however, as Runcton openers Bunting and Faivelowitz blitzed Gary Coulson and Dan Hayward, taking the score to 53-0 in just 7 overs. From there, it was really a damage limitation exercise but spin twins Bickel and Moye both produced impressive displays. Bickel trapped Faivelowitz lbw for 43, before taking a superb boundary catch to dismiss Bunting and hand Moye his first Alliance wicket. Moye went on to take a second, as Gary Coulson clung onto a catch at short fine leg off Lieshman for 23.
That was to prove the last breakthrough, however, as Runcton cruised to victory in 29 overs.
