GREAT MELTON (25 points) beat WINTERTON (2 points) by 9 wickets at Melton Park in the Norfolk Alliance Division 3

Richard Waddell finished his 2017 season in a high by breaking the Melton record for most wickets in a league season for Melton since the maximum number of overs that can be bowled by a individual in an innings was reduced to 9. In taking his 24, 25, and 26th wicket of the season, he did what he has done all season, which was to come back strongly in his second spell to quash any kind of thought that Winterton might have retained of posting a competitive total. He bowled quickly and with intent returning figures of 3-26 from his 9 overs. It was all too much for a side who were clearly under-strength and under-equipped.

Man of the match Aaron Garner (9-2-20-3) also produced a hugely effective spell, and in particular removed Winterton’s dangerous opener, Wesley Noble-Parker for 33, as he threatened to make a significant contribution. He fell to an excellent catch from Mohammed Aslam in the deep. The total of 125 was no where near sufficient on a surface which was surprising hard and true given the amount of rain which had fallen during the week. The joy of good covers!

Richard Wood (49) and Matt Clark (44 not out) all but knocked off the required total with a century opening stand. There were additional points for Melton as they reached their target for the loss of Wood. These points may prove valuable in the race for a top two spot in division 3. With two games to go, against Old Buckingham and Acle, there is still much to play for.
