Melton U13s beat Diss, Fakenham and Sheringham to reach the ECB U13s county final but, although they had beaten Swardeston by 1 run the week before in the Alan Bridgewater Cup, the strong Swardeston team, full of county players, proved too strong on this occasion.
Swardeston won the toss and put Melton into bat which saw Rob Smith (0) caught behind in the first over. This set the tone for the rest of Melton’s innings with only Joey Greenslade (28) reaching double figures, the next highest score being Sam Carding (7). With Melton finding scoring difficult after Greenslade was caught, Swardeston brought on their spinners which led to a collapse in the batting with Melton being all out for 55 in the 19th over. With a small total to defend Melton decided to set an attacking field and see if could get some quick wickets. Unfortunately Swardeston’s batsman where able to find the gaps with some powerful shots and reached their target in 11 overs with the loss of 2 wickets. There was a wicket for Luke Marchant (3-0-17-1) the other was a run out. Ben Carding finished with figures of 4-0-14-0. Despitethe defeat Melton’s boys should be proud of their achievements in reaching the final.
