Great Melton U12s produced a series of excellent performances in the Lords Taverners Indoor Tournament held at the UEA last Saturday but it wasn’t quite enough to carry off the trophy. The team of Luke Marchant, Tom Moye, Fergus Hughes, Craig Wilson, Logan Stearman, Lewis Thurston and Patrick Walton beat Vauxhall Mallards, Garboldisham, and Ashmanhaugh & Barton Wanderers in the group stage to easily qualify for the semi-final where they came up against last season’s Terry Moore Trophy conquerors, Swardeston.
An excellent performance saw Melton triumph in the final over. Swardeston needed 41 runs from their final 4 overs, and by the time the last over arrived they needed 11 runs to win, however Swardeston did not count on the boys’ determination and Melton picked up 3 wickets to win comfortably.
The final was a different matter, however, as a fast improving Ashmanhaugh and Barton Wanderers, who Melton had beaten earlier, batted first and amassed 192 runs without losing a wicket. Melton were never really in this game, lost regular wickets and in the end fell well short but, overall, it was a fine performance from the boys especially as they were without injured skipper Ryan Howard.
The U14s Tournament is on Saturday 17th March.
