Great Melton’s U13 Girls’ team of Aimee Palmer (Capt), Robyn Edge, Laura Edge, Rachel Hustler, Cassie Mawby, Holly Marchant, Bethany Harmer, Becky Greenslade and Alice Greenslade won the Lady Taverners’ Girls Softball Tournament against teams from Garboldisham, Martham and Old Buckenham. It was a splendid performance from Melton’s first-ever girls’ team who now represent Norfolk to the regional tournament. With Chris Brook and Mark Cadge unable to attend because of work, thanks to their daughters, Louise Cadge and Hannah Brook for overseeing the team.
Here is a report of the day written by Hannah:
Although the weather was looking cloudy and wet, Great Melton girls attended the Ladies Taverners’ Under 13 tournament at Garboldisham. Four teams contested the tournament, playing to represent Norfolk at the regional finals. Melton were up against Garboldisham first and fielded well with Robyn Edge taking two stumpings and Bethany Harmer holding a wonderful catch in the deep. Melton also batted well, Robyn scoring 20 before she had to retire. Melton went on to win the game against Garboldisham and all the girls came off with massive grins on their faces and ready to play Martham in the next round.
Martham’s team was looking strong with consistent bowling and tight fielding. Aimee Palmer started to play her shots but a good ball sent our skipper back and it was time for Bethany Harmer to show off her batting skills scoring an excellent 19. With a batting score of 66 the Melton girls had to try and keep the wides and no balls down. Good fielding, particularly by Rachel Hustler and Alice Greenslade kept Melton in the game and Holly Marchant showed that she could deal with the pressure bowling a good last over as the game ended in a tie!
Old Buckenham were our next opponents. Rebecca Greenslade, Robyn Edge and Aimee Palmer all scored 20, and Laura Edge also batted extremely well. With four balls to come Alice Greenslade joined in the batting, scoring her first run of the season (1 not out). Fielding again was great from Melton and, even though the rain came at the end of the game, it didn’t stop the girls winning by 80 runs and progressing to the regional finals in July
Louise and I would like to say thank you to all parents for their commitment to stay in the rain and support the team. Thanks to Steve as well for joining us for the day. Well done girls!
