Great Melton U11s played well to beat Norwich at Postwick and comfortably qualify for the Terry Moore quarter finals. Batting first Melton scored 305-5 with Ben Tree hitting some fine shots in his 25 (out twice), George Alcock scoring 15 not out, James Alcock 13 (out once) and Callum Marcham 8 (out once) against some good Norwich bowling especially from George who took 3-20 from his 3 overs.

While the batting was good, with Evan Mercer, Jake Canning, George and Charlie Hosmer all unbeaten, several batsmen lost wickets by hitting across the line to straight balls. However, Melton’s net total of 275 was a challenging one. Owen got Norwich off to a good start with 11 but early wickets for Charlie Hosmer set the tone. The Norwich batsmen had no answer to Melton’s accurate and varied attack. James Alcock took 3-3 in 2 overs, all clean bowled, while superb catches from Ben (3), Charlie, Jake Canning, George and Evan helped Ben (2-11), George (2-5) and Evan (2-2) add to the wicket haul. By the 16th over Melton had taken 12 wickets for 278 runs as Norwich finished with a net score of 206. Callum Marcham did a good job behind the stumps as Melton won by a comfortable 69 runs.

Although this was another good performance by a rapidly developing team, Manager Martin Alcock, is still looking for improvements, particularly the need to defend the straight balls and cut down on the extras – the team conceded 33 in wides and no-balls! Well done to all, though, for finishing 2nd behind Swardeston in Terry Moore Group 1. It means an away quarter-final against the winner of Group 3 which looks likely to be either Acle or Ashmanhaugh & Barton Wanderers.
