Alborough-Tony-300x225Right-hand batsman; Right-arm moon-ball bowler

Known to everyone as ‘Beefy’ or ‘The Ginger Prince’, Tony is now in his 31st season with Melton and is second in the overall appearances list behind the Chairman with 800 games to his name – an achievement for which he received a deserved special award at last season’s dinner.   He has scored 11811 runs including 6 centuries and 35 half-centuries and has taken 202 catches. Sunday captain for several seasons, Beefy led the first team to Norfolk League Division 2 promotion in 2001 and captained the A Team in 2004. In 2008 he scored 632 runs  with a highest score of 85 to help the A Team to the Norfolk League Division 4 championship but, for the last few seasons he has flitted between the As, Bs and Cs – whichever team will have him really! His ‘crabby’ style of batting is not always pleasing on the eye but, whatever his critics say, he is often highly effective. Beefy loves a bit of width outside off stump and and, at his belligerant best, has perfected the powerful swat over cover point as his a trade-mark shot!  Although not well known as a bowler, his ‘moon ball’ is famous throughout the club but he only unleashes this deadly weapon on very rare occasions. A ginger ‘afro’ wig and sideburns earned him the porn-star nickname ‘Rodney Pecker’ on the ‘Night Fever’ tour and he is famous for his grumpiness when things don’t go well – and sometimes when they do go well. Beefy’s natural penchant for pessimism has been well-exercised as a life-long Norwich City fan but, with Michelle in his life, we have seen more of a breezy affability to his character.  He is the sort of player who will ‘do a job’ wherever he plays and a real club stalwart whose stats speak for themselves. In 2016 he came to our rescue by taking over the B Team Captaincy when nobody else stepped forward and led the Bs to third place in NCL Division 2.  He has now handed over the B Team reins to Matt Rushton and is into running in a big way.  Having started with a few Park Runs in Catton, Beefy has discovered he is quite good at it and, has clocked up a few impressive P.B.s recently.  His sobriquet no longer seems so appropriate but he’ll always be Beefy to us!
