Great Melton U11s beat Acle U11s by 5 runs at Acle in the Terry Moore Trophy Quarter Final
Melton U11s produced one of the best-ever performances by a Melton junior side to reach the semi-final of the Terry Moore Trophy with a 5-run victory over Acle. A win looked most unlikely as Acle’s first pair J. Brannigan (7) and D.Brannigan 24) got their innings off to a flying start with 37 off the first 4 overs without losing a wicket. Melton’s bowlers were undeterred, however, and, against the other Acle pairings, maintained an excellent line and length. A wicket for Lewis Thurston (2-0-6-1) lifted confidence and 3 more wickets followed, helped by good catches from Ryan Howard and Luke Marchant. With few extras conceded, Melton eventually restricted the home side to 287-4, a net total of 267. Fergus Hughes was the pick of the bowlers with 2-6 but Howard (3-0-12-0), Craig Wilson (2-0-9-0) and Marchant (3-0-12-1) all bowled well. All would depend on how well Melton batted and what a performance they produced. Skipper Howard (14) played some delightful shots as he and Tom Moye (5) hit 34 off the first 4 overs. Fergus Hughes (3) and Matt Ling (3) then added a further 13 and Luke Marchant (11) and Logan Stearman (1) 18 more to leave Melton on 265-0. It meant last pair Lewis Thurston and Craig Wilson just needed to score 3 runs and not get out! Two singles and a wide edged Melton ahead and, when Thurston hit a short delivery for four it gave them some breathing space. Wilson and Thurston both showed superb defensive technique and, in the end Melton totalled 272 without losing a single wicket – a fantastic achievement.
