The Sunday friendly side made the trip to Buxton. On a ground that sported longer grass, feathers and guano than Mike allows on Melton Park, Buxton chose to bat first.

Kyle Mason and Ben Carding bowled tight opening spells with 29 coming from the first 10 overs and Ben bowled opener Taylor. Craig Wilson followed up with a tight spell of 5 overs for 9 runs and tempted R. Meek into skying a  catch to Kyle Mason at mid-on.

M.Meek, who batted throughout the 40 overs for 60, and G Bunn 48 (probably no relation) accelerated the scoring with a partnership of 70 from 15 overs. While Alex Tonnison slowed progress with 19 coming from his 5 overs, it was Fergus Hughes who broke the partnership inducing a good catch on the mid-wicket boundary by Ben Carding.

Sam Carding and Kevin Frazer each took a wicket in the finishing spell though Buxton finished on a challenging 187-5.

The Melton reply struggled for momentum early on with George Ducker, Simon Carding and Toby Carter dismissed in the first 11 overs with 21 runs scored. The most productive partnership of the innings of 49 was between Ben Carding, 30, and Clive Gristwood, 14, though the required run rate was always out of reach. A composed innings of 20 by Fergus Hughes helped the tail wag a little until the innings closed in the 35th over, on 127 all out.

This match was useful for the bowlers to put in a competitive spell and batsmen to get an opportunity. Fielders will look forward to more even and clean surfaces as the friendly season develops.”
