Great Melton B 162 / 6 (8 pts) lost to Sprowston B 163 / 8 (23pts) by 4 wickets.
Great Melton’s B team slipped agonisingly to their fourth consecutive league defeat of the season and already sit 17 pts adrift of the next placed side in the embryonic table after a disappointing loss at home to Sprowston B.
Invited to bat first on an uncovered pitch suffering badly from overnight rain, the going was always likely to be difficult with the ball barely getting above shin height. Steve Clarke (55) was initially watchful and patient alongside a slightly more aggressive Connor Stearman (18) as they looked to compile the first meaningful opening partnership of the summer. Three quick wickets brought Jon Moxon (40) to the crease in a need to make a score to get his own season up and running. Sprowston’s profligacy allowed the score to keep ticking as they gave away 23 extras in a total of 162 off the allotted 45overs.
Debutantes Phil Gray (13*) and Craig Loxston (6*) took the hosts to the 4th batting point, and a potentially competitive score line.
The returning Kyle Mason (1/24) shared the new ball with Phil Gray (2/18) and with the visitors falling to 3/14 off 11 overs, things were looking good for the home side. Mick Ollerton (48) and JoeKeeley (27) had other ideas, and rode their combined luck before Harry Jones (42*) and Shaun Corcoran (12) marshalled the riposte and accelerated the scoring as wickets fell at regular intervals, to secure victory with 11 deliveries to go. Craig Wilson (0/15) bowled very tight lines and gave nothing away. Joe Bickel (3/35) was a constant threat and was perhaps surprised to not complete his spell.
On a positive note, Melton were able and prepared to graft and compile a decent score, and have a wicket taking threat with the ball which is something to build on. Ground fielding however remains an issue, and possibly cost them this game.
