GREAT MELTON B (7 points) lost to DRAYTON (26 points) by 82 runs at Town Close in the Norfolk League Division 4
Melton B’s played their first game of the season at their adopted home ground Town Close. The pitch and outfield looked a picture and played well.
Drayton were put into bat and some really tight bowling by Zef Ishtiaq and Tom Smith kept the rate down despite the fast outfield and short boundaries, not to mention the missing fielder (captain’s mistake which won’t happen again!) Beating the bat regularly, both bowlers were unlucky not to make a breakthrough but, as the batters’ confidence grew, so did the run rate. Sam Stuart and Richard Howell made their debuts and both produced some excellent balls but again with no luck as openers Andy Hawes (116) and James Reeve (72 not out) enabled Drayton to score 262-2. Our 5th bowler Rob Smith delivered an incredibly mature spell for a 14-year-old.
Melton started well against a good and moderately quick Drayton attack. Rob Smith opened and made 28 runs in good time and certainly laid a foundation for an assault on the Drayton score. Unfortunately batsmen got themselves in only to throw their wickets away with a rash and sometimes unnecessary shot. We must learn to build an innings. Richard Howell, Tom Smith and Sam Stuart all made good contributions and our total of 7 points was testament to the fact that heads never dropped despite being on the losing side. Melton eventually managed a creditable 184 all out in reply..
It was a great pleasure to captain a side with so much determination and I am sure results will soon follow. Well done and thanks to you all.
