Left-hand batsman; left-arm spin bowler
Simsy joined Melton in 2009 after some coaxing from Jon Moxon, his former work colleague. He celebrated by taking 6-29 on his debut for the B Team against Happisburgh. He claims the move to Melton “revitalised” his career although it didn’t last long initially as, after taking 11 wickets in his first two games, a badly broken finger put paid to any further action until late in 2010. Born in Boston, Lincolnshire, Rob moved to Suffolk in the late 70s and played for Lowestoft but he really made his mark with Vauxhall Mallards, taking 42 wickets with his left-arm spin in his first season for their A Team in Alliance Division 1A. He moved back to Lowestoft and was Player-of-the-Year at Denes Oval in 2000. He also captained Southwold for a time before ‘retiring’ in 2006. Simsy has consistently shown he can be a matchwinner with the ball. In 2011 he took 25 wickets in the A Team’s surge to promotion including a superb 7-33 against Diss and, in 2012 he bowled 100 overs, taking 24 wickets at an average of 15, that included a season’s best 6-20 against Kirkley & Lowestoft Railway, performances that earned him a call-up to the First Team. He was a vital member of Richard Waddell’s promotion-winning squad in 2013, taking an incredible 34 wickets and, even during the following season when the team were relegated back to Division 2 Rob took 22 wickets. After a season back at Lowestoft, Simsy returned to Melton in 2018 and, for the last 2 seasons, has been a regular in the A Team.
